The talking calf

Following up to my post last week about our overly 'talkative' calf and a really funny story -  I thought I would share just how much personality this little guy has!

The calves are always one of the biggest hits on any farm tour if not THE biggest hit! The kids (and teachers!) just LOVE the calves. They enjoy the interaction that they can have with them - touching them, taking pictures with them, letting them lick their hands or suck on their clothes... If you've ever been around a baby calf, you know about the licking and sucking!!

So, we just happen to have the most friendly, talkative and interactive calf that we have ever had on a farm tour right now! This guy has something to say (moo) ALL of the time!

To set the stage - this calf has a pen inside of my 'make-shift' classroom building. On a tour, I will bring the students in to see the calf and then they will cross the room to sit on benches in my classroom. This is where we cover all the great foods that are made from milk and the importance of 3 servings of dairy a day!

So, I had a group of students on tour and they had just taken their seats in my classroom and the story went something like this:

Me: "Boys and Girls - how many of you like to eat yogurt?"

Calf: blurted out a very loud "Moo!" (Kids laughed crazily!)

Me: "How many of you like to eat cottage cheese?"

Calf: "Moo!"

Me: "How many of you like to eat sour cream?"

Calf: "Moo!"

Me: "How many of you like to drink flavored milk?"

Calf: "Moo!"

By this time, not only were the kids laughing extremely hard, the teachers were even shedding tears from laughter! This silly calf continued this sequence for a good 10 more questions! It was hysterical!! I started asking completely random questions and every time he would respond with a loud "Moo!"

Although it might have appeared like we had rehearsed this - it wasn't the case at all! This little 4-day old calf just had has a lot to say! Since that particular tour, this has happened quite a few times. He has so much personality!!!

I had a teacher ask me just today "Since you have so many baby calves born on the farm in a year - are they ever 'not cute'??" My response "Absolutely NOT!"

  1. LOVE this story, and I am so glad you have such a great relationship with the schools around you. It is a great thing you are doing, keeping the kids alert and aware of the importance of Ag in their lives.

P.S. Usually the class clown has TWO legs! ;-)
