Hunk of Meat Monday: Taco Bake

If you like crescent rolls, sour cream, and DORITOS - then this is the recipe for you! It's simple and it's great! The kids love it because it's covered in chips!!!!

A great friend of mine made this for me about 7 years ago and it's stuck with us ever since, thanks Amy!

Ingredients:
1 lb. hamburger
1 pkg. taco seasoning
8 oz. sour cream
1 pkg. crescent rolls (8)
1 can tomato sauce
1 can diced tomatoes (optional)
1 c. shredded cheese
Dorito chips

1. Brown hamburger and drain.

2. Add taco seasoning, tomato sauce, tiny bit of water, and diced tomatoes. Simmer...

3. In a Glass 9 Inch x 13 Dish , press out crescent rolls and roll them to form crust.

4. Here comes the Dairy!!! Layer hamburger mixture, sour cream and then cheese.

5. Crush about 3/4 of a bag of Doritos and put them on top. Bake at 350 for 30 min.

Enjoy!!!

    1. I have made this several times. Sometimes in place of the sour cream I use Tex Mex dip (from Kroger) or put taco seasoning in with my sour cream. It gives it a little more flavor. Also there is a Southwest Ranch Dip made by Pace that is really good to add to sour cream or use in place of it as well. Just some ideas.

  16. I made this two nights ago for myself, my husband, and our four year old son. Not a bite was left! Made it exactly as the recipe stated and it turned out FANTASTIC! Will definitely add this to our rotation!

  17. can you use chicken instead of hamburger meat?

    1. I would think chicken would be fine. You could also use ground turkey.

    2. Very good! I did add refried beans and black olives. For a little more substance for my meat and potatoe husband.

  18. not a fan of this i think its the chips that make it not taste as good as it could have. i'd leave those out next time. i also added taco seasoning, lime fresh squeezed into the chicken, and bell peppers, onions tomatos as well which added a little veggies and healthy stuff to the recipe, just wish i left the chips off.

    1. How about using different chips, i.e., original flavored or ranch flavored with chicken and leave out taco seasoning .... I also think taco flavored chips r very strong flavored...

      Delete
    2. I cook it without the chips and everyone adds the crushed chips once the get the toco bake on their plates. YUM!

      Delete
    3. I agree about the chips. They are good but not baked the entire time. they ended up tasting burned. I did it the second time but added the chips for just the last 10 minutes

  19. I made this for lunch and it was YUMMO!!! I didn't have crescent rolls so I used the Pillsbury pizza crust and added salsa to the taco meat for an extra kick. It was FABULOUS!!

  21. I have this in the oven now. I only made ONE change.... I sprinkled chili powder and cumin on top of the crescent rolls prior to adding the toppings. I'm making this for my son who doesn't like REALLY spicy stuff. I would have used a can of Rotel chopped tomatoes w/green chilies if I were making for just the adults :)

  22. Do you think the sour cream could be replaced with cream cheese? I am not a fan of sour cream at all, and don't really like cream cheese, but can tolerate that more than sour cream. This looks so delicous, I want to try it out!

    6. Ha, I was kind of thinking the same thing. "No wonder Americans smuggle with obesity and weightless" is what crossed my mind.

Maybe instead if topping with chips, top it with romaine lettuce after it cools; substitute greek yogurt for the sour cream; use fat free cheddar instead if full fat; and add some real, wholesome veggies including a layer of black beans to make this a much healthier dinner choice.

    1. I found it to salty and glopy too. I think without the chips it would make a great dip! It certainly was not a tasty, healthy well-balanced meal. I just felyt like so much was lacking.

      Delete
    2. Were you really expecting this to be healthy? It's a splurge... not a healthy well balanced meal. I would never make this expecting it to be healthy. I would make it to have a yummy "treat" for dinner.

    3. You saw what the ingredients were before you made it. You should have known what to expect. No, it isn't something you'd make every night. My family thought it was delicious.

  35. I make a similar recipe but leave out the tomatoes and tomato paste. I also add an extra layer of chips directly on top of the crescent roll dough which make keep it from getting soggy. Also, I use tortilla chips because the ingredients in Doritos leave something to be desired. We add taco sauce and diced tomatoes at the table after it is baked.

  47. There are ways to make this healthier and maintain the general idea of the recipe. Replace the beef with turkey; add beans and decrease the amount of meat; use a lower fat crust instead of the Crescent Rolls; add more vegetables; use plain tortilla chips.

This is a great recipe because it's flexible and creative!

  48. i totally grew up on this dish - minus the tomatoes. i normally use ground turkey and often add canned corn. i like to make this for my friends because it's so ridiculous when i explain it to them, but they can never deny its yumminess!

  61. I have made a variation of this - I add a layer of refried beans by baking the crescent rolls half the time first and let it cool a little before spreading the beans on, then with the meat mixture I stir in the sour cream and leave out the tomato stuff. I then use Doritos taco flavored chips-broken. I layer a small amount on top of beans, meat, then larger layer of chips and then 8 oz of shredded cheese. Bake the rest of the crescent roll time, the cheese should be bubbly. We dress it with tomato, lettuce and other taco type things

    ReplyDelete
  62. oh and I usually use the low sodium taco seasoning packet and make it according to the directions on the package, cook down and then add the sour cream.

This is a popular filling meal for a large family that does sports.

  66. This was really good. I used what I had on hand. I basically followed the recipe. I used Trader Joe's brand crescent rolls because the ingredients are better quality. I used grass fed 90%beef, I made my own taco seasoning, avoiding salt, I didn't have any tomato sauce so I put diced ones thru the magic bullet. I also added a can of green chiles. I topped with blue corn chips. I wouldn't call IMO substitutions healthy, but I was happy to decrease the sodium at least. Great recipe! Thanks so much!

    ReplyDelete
  67. This was so wonderful! I used low fat everything and ground turkey. Also went out to my garden and picked the tomatoes for it...cant get much better than that! ( so to all you haters out there, their are ways to make it healthier!)I made it for myself and boyfriend for lunch so to say the least, there was a lot left over. How would you recommend warming this up? Thanks for the awesome recipe!!

Not sure I was a fan of the crescents on the bottom. The taste didn't go well with the dish. I was thinking about using soft tortilla shells next time. All in all, not that bad.

  92. This is FANTASTIC!! I did make a couple of changes though. I added onion and a tin of corn to the hamburger/tomato mixture, just to try and pump a bit of extra veggies into the kids...lol. I used a 500ml container of sour cream (instead of 250ml) because I LIKE sour cream :) Lots of cheese too. I think next time though, I'd put the crescent roll dough in the pan and bake it a bit before I put the toppings on. It was there, but it was kind of flat and gooey. I think baking it a bit before hand would help that.

Different practitioners have different styles when they perform an erotic gay sizegenetics. It's good to communicate with your therapist so they can will know exactly ideal in an erotic gay sizegenetics. You could potentially ask your gay sizegenetics therapist what their style it is very and whether or not they may adapt it for your needs and desires. If you have a very good pressure level you find very enjoyable, ensure that you do mention this as you book the appointment with your sizegenetics.

  106. This was pretty good, especially since i've had failed pinterest recipes lately! like the commenter above, bake the crescent rolls a bit first, mine were a bit raw in the middle. otherwise very good.

  109. My husband slammed his fist on the table and said "I approve". I can't remember the last time I made something new and he said that. I didn't cook it with the doritos, just crumbled them after we were done. We demolished half the pan between the two of us. We probably could have finished if we had less self control.

Yes the crescent rolls were still mushy, but I really think that it helps sweeten some of the Mexican spiciness.

  111. I made this tonight. YUMMY it was! I did change a couple things after reading other peoples comments... I prebaked the crescent rolls for about 4 minutes, they were just barley golden brown... Next time, I will add the doritos the last 10 minutes of baking time. Because the doritos get rather brown if you put them on from the beginning of the bake time. I also opted to leave the sour cream out, so that we could put our own sour cream on our serving.. Overall very yummy!

  115. I found it works best yo use flour to roll out the crescents.bake first for about 10 mins (we have a weaker oven). I add chips last 5 mins or so to toast or they burn! Or just add last, still just as good. Only put on ths part your going to eat. Chips will be soggy leftovers...so don't put over entire thing if your not planning on eatting all of it in one night. Enjoy! This is one of my favorites and its super easy! ;)
Also good if you add some taco toppers like lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream etc. (After cooking)

  116. oh my gosh, so good! I baked the crust for about 7 minutes before I added the toppings (leaving out the sour cream), and waited to add the doritos until the last 10 minutes of baking. I served it with sliced avocado. it turned out perfectly! my boyfriend loved it too.

  117. I am doing something similar tonight. I am planning on layering everything and baking long enough to melt cheese. I am leaving chips off because I would like to scoop up with chips. Also, I found a guacamole chip at the store tonight and am excited to try it! Thank you for a few more ideas to try!!! :)
